Dominion Permanently Shutters Kewaunee Nuclear Generating Station

In follow-up to Channing's December 2012 newsletter missive on the shut down and dismantling of ┬áDominion Resources 556 MW Kewaunee Nuclear Generating Station in Wisconsin, the Midwest Independent System Operator determined after review of power system reliability impacts, the retirement of Kewaunee would not result in violations of applicable reliability criteria.   Dominion permanently shut it down on May 7, 2013.

More recent news reports more clearly stated the plant was unable to compete on price with natural gas-fueled plants. One could perceive a lot of eggs accumulating in the natural gas generation basket.

Interestingly, Wisconsin lawmakers had drafted a bill to help nuclear power by declaring it an "advanced energy" source that could qualify for the Wisconsin green power mandate.
